Free SUP surfing courses to improve safety on Aarhus Bay

The spring sunshine attracts many to the water in Aarhus, and sailors, rowers and SUP surfers alike are enjoying Aarhus Bay in a big way during the summer months. Knowing how to stay safe on the water is important for everyone to move safely between each other, which is why the local surf school Surf Agency is now offering everyone a free SUP beginner course.

Press release 21 May 2025

For Aarhus-based surf school Surf Agency, safety on the water is a top priority. That's why they now offer a Open, free Stand Up Paddle beginner courseso that new SUP surfers can stay safe on the water for their own safety and the safety of other vessels.

- As surfers, we are always aware of safety, wind and weather when we go out to sea, and we want to pass this knowledge on to everyone who goes out on a SUP board in Aarhus Bay, says Finja GΓΆtz, who runs Surf Agency together with her partner Michael Allman.Β

Safe playground on the water

The course takes place every Tuesday from 17-19 at Aarhus Marina. It normally costs DKK 600, but in May and June you can take the course for free. However, places are limited, so you must sign up at surfagency.dk/sup-stand-up-paddle-course. As an added bonus, the course gives you access to become a member of SUP club Club Surf Agency.Β

- Before we jump on the water, we teach safety and traffic rules at sea and teach the participants how to read wind and weather conditions. Then we paddle out together in Aarhus Bay and learn some technique on the board and do rescue exercises," says Finja GΓΆtz.Β

Quality equipment increases sports enjoyment

The surf school lends out all the equipment participants need, including wetsuits, compulsory life jackets and quality SUP boards. They are all hard boards and the school never uses inflatable soft boards.Β

- Inflatable boards are more unstable and can quickly drift far in the wind. We also teach how to navigate in strong offshore winds, which is information that you don't get if you buy an inflatable board in the supermarket," says Michael Allman.Β

Hard boards are safer, and Michael Allman's experience is that those who have tried soft boards are drawn back to the sport when they get on a surfboard that suits their weight and height and offers better stability.

More fun with good techniqueΒ

The course also teaches participants to use their body correctly when paddling and moving around the board during turns.Β

- When you learn the technique, it becomes even more fun and you realise how many ways you can use the SUP board for play, cooperative exercises and racing. We want to show people what a great sport it is and how much it has to offer," says Michael Allman.

Course gives access to SUP club

Surf Agency was the first in Aarhus to start offering SUP courses 14 years ago and has extensive experience teaching beginners on the board.

The school has previously offered free SUP taster sessions, but now it's a full beginner course that you get under your belt. The beginner course is a prerequisite for becoming a member of the SUP club Club Surf Agency, which you can now jump straight into. The club offers several weekly group training sessions, full access to borrow boards from early morning to late evening and plenty of surfing fun and community.Β Β

- Of course, we hope that even more people will discover our wonderful sport and join our vibrant community. And for those who are just beginners, we hope that they will have a safer and more secure time on the water, and that we in this way contribute to greater safety in our wonderful playground in the sea around Aarhus, says Finja GΓΆtz.Β
